This museum exhibits the relics and the accumulated valuables by the Chapter of the Cathedral of Girona. The collection consists on sacral art, liturgical objects and works of goldsmithing.
It is placed in the three first Chapter Halls. This rich Treasure is constituted by donations of kings, bishops, abbots, canons and other donors, remains of altarpieces and other objects of cult gathered during the last millennium.
Amongst the valuable pieces, it excels the "Cross of the Enamels'' a remarkable jewel work of the 14th century, not clearly attributed to one author. The name is due to the great amount of enamels that it has. There're representations of the Birth, the Adoration of the Kings, the Ascension and the Arrival of the Holly Spirit. Also, there're figures of saints, angels and other scenes. It has a beautiful crucifix in the obverse of the Pantocrator.
There's also an Arab casket of the 10th century from Hixem II. It's made from silver and it has ornamentation of ferules that pull off from the same stem. It has an important artistic and historical value as it's considered the most antique specimen from the Hispano-Arabic goldsmithing.
Other pieces are Romanesque chalices of lead of the 12th and 13th centuries, an Arabian casket of ivory from the 13th century, a reliquary of the Vera-Cruz with enamels of the 14th century, some gospels of the 14th century, a the Bible of Carles V given to the bishop Dalmaci de Mur by the king of France and which contains an autograph of the same king of the 16th century.
BEATUS
The Beatus or Book of the Apocalypse, written by the Lay Brother of Liébana against the adopcionisme, copy carried out in the monastery of Tàvara (Zamora) in 975. The miniatures are from Eude, serf of God, and of the presbyter Emeteri. The colors used provides an impressive polychromy influenced by the styles Mozarab and Byzantine and maybe a little Persian, Egyptian and even Indian. Its writing is Visigothic and the miniatures are extremely stylized with angels of sharpened wings and great eyes. This specimen, which is considered the most important and perfect copy, was served for printing to a Swiss publishing company for a determinate number for bibliophiles, libraries and universities.
TAPESTRY OF THE CREATION
The Tapestry of the Creation is a Romanesque work of the 11th century. It's the most valuable jewel of the Treasure. It measures 4,15 meters of width for 3,65 meters of height, although originally it had wider dimensions as it was cut on the right and inferior sides. The drawing is embroidered on the fabric and is supposed that it was carried out in Girona. Its disposition is the following: in the central part a big circle divided into 8 borders convergent with representations of the Holly Spirit in the form of pigeon, angels of the light and of the darkness, separation of the waters of the earth, creation of the sun, the stars and the moon, creation of the birds, fish and the rest of animals and to finish, Adam and Eva.
In the center of the mentioned circle, another minor and concentric cuts the convergent borders and surrounds the figure of Pantocrator in attitude of blessing with the right hand, sustaining an open book with the other hand with this inscription: S(AN) C(TUS)D(EV)S. REX FORTIS
In the four outer angles, the four winds turn up represented: Septentrion (north), Subsolanus (east), Cephirus (west) and Austere (noon).
In the outer ornamental borders, in compartments, characters with short tunics, like Samsó, also are observed the year symbolized by a bearded figure, allegories of the months with agricultural works typical of the Romanesque iconography and, in the angles the seasons of the year.
In the disappeared borders there were scenes of the "Invenció de la Santa Creu" and the four rivers of the Paradise which only remanins the Geró.
The tapestry represents a kind of mediaeval cosmogonic synthesis influenced by a certain Hellenic air.
It's an unique work of great value in the world. |
